Why My Hardwood Floor Has Gaps in Austin Winter

You wake up one December morning and notice gaps between your hardwood floor boards that were not there in October. By spring they are gone again. This is one of the most common calls we get from Austin homeowners with solid hardwood floors, and in most cases it is completely normal. Here is what is happening and how to tell when it is something to worry about.

The Science: Wood Moves with Humidity

Solid hardwood is a hygroscopic material. It absorbs and releases moisture from the air. When the air is humid, wood expands. When the air is dry, wood contracts. In Austin, winter brings dry northers that can drop indoor relative humidity to 25 to 35 percent. At that humidity level, hardwood boards shrink across their width, and gaps open between them.

This is not a defect. It is wood behaving exactly as it should. The gaps will close again when humidity rises in spring and summer. A well-installed hardwood floor in Austin will go through this cycle every year for decades.

When Are Gaps Normal vs. a Problem?

Normal: Gaps that appear in winter and close in spring. Gaps that are consistent across the floor. Gaps that are less than the thickness of a nickel on 2.25-inch strip flooring. Gaps that have been present for multiple years without getting worse.

A problem: Gaps that do not close in summer. Gaps that are growing wider each year. Gaps accompanied by cupping, crowning, or buckling. Gaps concentrated in one area of the floor. Gaps that appeared suddenly after a plumbing leak or flooding event.

If your gaps fall into the second category, there may be a moisture issue, a subfloor problem, or an installation issue that needs to be addressed.

How to Reduce Seasonal Gapping

Use a Humidifier

The most effective way to reduce seasonal gapping is to maintain indoor relative humidity between 35 and 55 percent year-round. A whole-house humidifier connected to your HVAC system is the most consistent solution. Portable humidifiers work for smaller areas. Target 40 to 45 percent RH during winter months.

Choose Narrower Boards

Wider boards show more movement. A 5-inch wide board will gap more visibly than a 2.25-inch strip floor under the same humidity conditions. If you are installing new hardwood and want to minimize seasonal gapping, narrower strips or engineered hardwood are better choices for Central Texas.

Consider Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood has a cross-ply construction that makes it significantly more dimensionally stable than solid hardwood. It still moves with humidity changes, but much less. For new installations in Austin, engineered hardwood is often the better long-term choice.

When Gaps Need Professional Repair

If your gaps are permanent and not closing seasonally, or if they are accompanied by structural issues, we can assess the floor and recommend the right repair. In some cases, boards need to be re-racked and re-nailed. In others, the floor needs to be sanded and refinished to blend repairs. We will give you an honest assessment before recommending any work.
