How Long Does Flooring Installation Take in Austin? A Room-by-Room Guide
Before you schedule your flooring project, you need a realistic timeline. Here is what to expect for every room type and flooring material.
One of the most common questions we get from Austin homeowners is how long the project will take. The honest answer is that it depends on the flooring type, the square footage, the condition of the subfloor, and how much prep work is needed. Here is a realistic breakdown so you can plan your schedule.
LVP Installation Timeline
LVP is the fastest flooring to install because it is a floating click-lock system with no adhesive cure time. A single room of 200 to 300 square feet takes about 3 to 4 hours including baseboard removal and reinstallation. A typical open-plan living and dining area of 600 to 800 square feet takes 6 to 8 hours, usually a full day.
For a whole-home LVP installation in a 1,500 to 2,000 square foot Austin home, plan for two to three days. Day one is typically demo (carpet removal or tile demo), subfloor assessment and any patching, and starting the installation in the main areas. Day two completes the installation, installs transitions, and reinstalls baseboards. Day three, if needed, handles any remaining rooms, stairs, and final cleanup.
Tile Installation Timeline
Tile takes longer than LVP because of the adhesive and grout cure times. A typical bathroom of 50 to 80 square feet takes two days: one day for setting the tile and one day for grouting after the adhesive cures. A kitchen floor of 200 to 300 square feet takes two to three days.
Large format tile takes longer than standard tile because each piece requires more precise placement and back-buttering. A kitchen with 24x24 tile takes about 50 percent longer than the same kitchen with 12x12 tile. Large format tile also requires a flatter subfloor, which may add leveling time.
After grouting, tile needs 24 to 48 hours before it can be walked on and 72 to 96 hours before heavy furniture is moved back. Plan for the room to be out of service for at least three to four days for a tile project.
Hardwood Installation Timeline
Solid hardwood installation takes about the same time as LVP for the installation itself, but the acclimation period adds time to the overall project. Hardwood needs 24 to 48 hours to acclimate to the home before installation. After installation, if the floor is being finished on-site (sand and finish), add two to three days for sanding, staining, and multiple finish coats with drying time between each coat.
Pre-finished hardwood eliminates the on-site finishing time and is ready to use immediately after installation. For most Austin homes, pre-finished hardwood is the practical choice.
Factors That Add Time
Subfloor leveling. Self-leveling compound needs 16 to 24 hours to cure before flooring can go down. This adds at least one day to the project. We always identify leveling needs during the estimate.
Significant demo. Tile demo is slow and physically demanding. A kitchen with 300 square feet of tile to demo takes a full day. Carpet demo is faster, typically 2 to 3 hours for a 1,000 square foot home.
Complex layouts. Diagonal patterns, herringbone, and custom borders take significantly longer than straight-lay patterns. Budget 50 to 100 percent more time for complex layouts.
Stairs. Stair installation is slow, detailed work. A standard 13-step staircase takes about 4 to 6 hours for LVP or hardwood treads and risers.
Planning Your Project Schedule
For most Austin homeowners, the practical advice is to plan for the project to take one day longer than the estimate. Surprises happen: a subfloor that needs more work than expected, a transition that needs to be custom-cut, a delivery that arrives late. Building a buffer into your schedule reduces stress.
If you are doing a whole-home project, consider doing it in phases if you cannot be out of the home for multiple days. We can do the main living areas first, then bedrooms on a second visit. This keeps the project manageable and keeps you in your home throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does LVP installation take for a whole house in Austin?
A typical 1,500 to 2,000 square foot Austin home takes two to three days for LVP installation. Day one covers demo and subfloor prep. Days two and three cover installation, transitions, and cleanup. Homes with significant leveling needs may add a day.
Can flooring be installed in one day?
A single room of 200 to 400 square feet can often be completed in one day including demo and installation. Whole-home projects almost always take two or more days. Rushing installation to fit it into one day compromises quality.
How long after flooring installation can I move furniture back?
For LVP and hardwood, wait 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back. This allows transitions and any adhesive to cure fully. For tile, wait 48 to 72 hours before walking on it and 72 to 96 hours before moving furniture back.
Does subfloor leveling add time to a flooring project?
Yes. Self-leveling compound needs 16 to 24 hours to cure before flooring can be installed over it. This typically adds one day to the project. We always identify leveling needs during the estimate so you can plan accordingly.
