Luxury Vinyl Plank Brands: Quality Issues Austin Homeowners Should Know

Learn which LVP brands offer best quality and which have issues. Expert advice from Austin flooring contractors on choosing luxury vinyl plank.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Brands: Quality Issues Austin Homeowners Should Know

Not all luxury vinyl plank is created equal. After installing hundreds of LVP floors across Travis and Williamson Counties, we've seen which brands perform beautifully and which cause headaches. Here's our honest assessment of LVP brands available in the Austin market.

What Makes Quality LVP

Before we discuss specific brands, understand what separates great LVP from mediocre:

Wear layer thickness: Look for 12-20 mil for residential, 20+ mil for commercial. Thicker wear layers resist scratches and last longer.

Core construction: Rigid core (SPC or WPC) provides stability and waterproof protection. Avoid flexible vinyl without rigid cores.

Locking mechanism: Quality click-lock systems install easily and stay locked. Cheap systems separate over time.

Realistic visuals: Advanced printing creates authentic wood grain without repetitive patterns.

Warranty: 20-year to lifetime residential warranties indicate manufacturer confidence.

Top-Tier LVP Brands (Our Recommendations)

1. COREtec

Why we love it: Industry leader with excellent rigid core technology, realistic visuals, and strong warranties. We install COREtec in 40% of our LVP projects.

Best products: COREtec Plus Enhanced, COREtec Pro Plus

Pros: Waterproof, durable, comfortable underfoot, wide style selection

Cons: Premium pricing ($4-7/sq ft material only)

Best for: Homeowners wanting top quality and willing to invest

2. Shaw Floorte

Why we recommend it: Shaw's reputation for quality extends to their LVP line. Floorte offers excellent performance at mid-range pricing.

Best products: Floorte Pro, Floorte Plus

Pros: Good warranty, realistic looks, stable pricing, widely available

Cons: Fewer style options than premium brands

Best for: Budget-conscious homeowners wanting name-brand quality

3. Mohawk SolidTech

Why it works: Mohawk's rigid core LVP performs well in Austin's climate. Good balance of quality and value.

Best products: SolidTech Plus, SolidTech Revelance

Pros: Strong warranty, good scratch resistance, comfortable

Cons: Some homeowners find visuals less realistic than premium brands

Best for: Mid-range budgets, rental properties, busy families

Mid-Tier Brands (Proceed with Caution)

LifeProof (Home Depot)

Our experience: Mixed results. Some installations perform well, others show wear quickly.

Pros: Affordable ($2-4/sq ft), easy DIY availability, decent warranty

Cons: Thinner wear layers, less realistic visuals, quality inconsistency

Best for: DIY installers on tight budgets, low-traffic areas

TrafficMaster (Home Depot)

Our take: Budget option that shows its price. Fine for rentals or temporary solutions.

Pros: Very affordable ($1.50-3/sq ft), waterproof

Cons: Thin wear layer (6-12 mil), scratches easily, limited styles

Best for: Rental properties, flip houses, extreme budget constraints

Brands to Avoid

Lumber Liquidators/LL Flooring house brands: History of quality issues and formaldehyde concerns. We don't install these.

Unknown Chinese imports: Sold online at rock-bottom prices. No warranty support, questionable materials, often fail within years.

Ultra-thin LVP (under 6 mil wear layer): Won't hold up to Texas living. Avoid regardless of brand.

What We Install Most

In our Austin-area projects:

  • 40% COREtec - Premium choice for quality-focused homeowners
  • 30% Shaw Floorte - Best value for mid-range budgets
  • 20% Mohawk SolidTech - Solid performer at fair price
  • 10% Other - Specialty products for specific needs
  • Red Flags When Shopping

"Waterproof" without rigid core: Flexible vinyl isn't truly waterproof. Insist on rigid core construction.

No wear layer specification: If they won't tell you mil thickness, walk away.

Prices too good to be true: Quality LVP costs $3-7/sq ft for materials. Anything significantly cheaper likely has issues.

Pressure to buy immediately: Reputable dealers let you take samples home and decide without pressure.
