Grout choices and movement-joint treatment solve different questions. Use this guide to keep color, finish and product questions separate from locations where the selected tile assembly may need a flexible movement joint. It is a discussion aid, not an installation drawing, assembly approval or product selection.
MAPEI explains that movement joints use an elastomeric sealant in place of hard grout to accommodate movement. Grout color and grout-system questions still matter in tile field joints, but they do not answer how a site-specific movement location should be treated.
TCNA says expansion and contraction allowance is needed in every tile installation, but exact joint location and frequency depend on site-related conditions. LATICRETE identifies changes in plane, floor-to-wall and wall-to-wall intersections, transitions and perimeter interfaces as locations to evaluate when applicable.
Confirm the exact tile, grout product instructions, substrate, movement in the building, exposure, waterproofing or water-management assembly where applicable, transitions and finish samples. A product data sheet and the verified project conditions control the final detail.
The floor, wall, corner and niche diagrams identify areas to discuss. They do not establish a joint size, sealant, backing, waterproofing method, grout selection, material quantity or construction sequence.
